Joy has been singing since before she could walk. Growing up surrounded by music and a variety of instruments, classical music was the “soundtrack” of Joy’s childhood, and helped to develop her natural ear. Later, studying the piano and violin for several years, Joy participated in eleven different courses of musical discipline in high school, a soloist in muiltiple vocal ensembles, as well as playing percussion, hand bells, and violin in a variety of instrumental groups. In 1996 Joy traveled with the hand bell choir to Egypt and Jordan, by invitation of Queen Noor. In her early twenties Joy began composing, and inspired by a friend, taught herself to play the bass guitar. After landing the role as bassist for a female band in Minneapolis, Joy helped write many of their songs. In 2005 Joy organized and sang with the Gold Tones, hired to play before all the Golden Gopher Football games at the Minneapolis Metrodome, and in 2006 hosted a weekly artist’s showcase & open mic at Jitter’s Bar & Cafe, managing and booking an increasing network of performance and visual artists. Joy then sang with a theatrical troupe and live band throughout the Twin Cities through 2007.
Having performed with a multitude of talented musicians, Joy is honored to have had the privilege of singing jazz with Scott Dercks, an extraordinary guitarist and musician, from 2004- 2008, playing their hearts out at nearly all of the hottest Minneapolis jazz venues, festivals, and countless private events.
Joy now lives in Chattanooga, TN, and performs throughout the region with David James, a well known, local guitarist with a deep and naturally diverse talent. The Divine Jazz Duo have played at The Tivoli Theater, at The Chattanoogan, 2 North Shore, Brix Nouveau, and countless weddings, anniversary’s, birthday’s, and private events in Chattanooga. Known for their passion for music and people, David and Joy bring joy to others.
